General Tsos Chicken WG style :)

Hello everyone,

After the recent success with our healthy Chicken Burgers with Spinach , I decided to go big or go home this week with our version of a Lighter General Tso’s chicken recipe from Damndelicious.net. Okay…there was a bit of  intimidation with this meal but it was surprisingly easy to make. Although I had a bit of moral support from my sister who happened to be around while this meal was prepared.  We meticulously followed the directions so that we could avoid any of the mishaps experienced with the Banana Pancakes situation (yea…pretty bad!).

The goal of #WGcookbook is to expand healthier options for family meal time choices.  Hope this process is helpful to other parents as well.

The recipe is a healthier version of the favorite Chinese take-out retrieved from damndelicious.net

A completely lightened-up, baked version made with half the calories.


    • 1 1/2 pounds boneless, skinless, chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch chunks
    • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
    • 2 large eggs, beaten
    • 2 cups crushed Corn Flakes
  • 1 1/2 cups chicken broth
  • 1/3 cup hoisin sauce
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 3 tablespoon brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch


  • Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. Coat a cooling rack with nonstick spray and place on a baking sheet; set aside.
  • Working in batches, dredge chicken in flour, dip into eggs, then dredge in crushed Corn Flakes, pressing to coat.
  • Place onto prepared baking sheet and coat with nonstick spray. Place into oven and bake until golden brown and crisp, about 13-15 minutes.
  • In a large saucepan over medium high heat, combine chicken broth, hoisin, rice vinegar, soy sauce, brown sugar and cornstarch until thickened, about 1-2 minutes. Stir in chicken and gently toss to combine.
  • Serve immediately.

Started with all of the ingredients. It’s a miracle that we had everything we needed in the house! :)

Dip the chicken in with the eggs and mix it with the flour.


Mix the chicken (coated with egg white) and flour with the Cornflakes.

The sauce mixture, thicken with the cornstarch in a pan over low heat.

Kids seemed to prefer the chicken without the sauce.


Kids preferred it without the sauce – tasty too!

Served General Tso’s with Rice and Salad (ran out of broccoli..Lol!)

Family Feedback:

Really positive feedback from us adults.

Not too enthusiatic feedback from the kids..although they loved for the chicken without the sauce.

Verdict: This recipe was easy enough and it will be added to our list of recipes, however the ‘sauce’ can probably be skipped for the kids.  Hopefully this is helpful to anyone looking to expand their options for their picky eaters.
